Let’s talk about golden hour for a minute, because I know you’ve probably heard photographers rave about it, and there’s a really good reason why.
Golden hour is that little window of time right before the sun sets (or just after it rises but realistically, we’re not planning family photos at sunrise with kids 😅). The sun sits low in the sky, and the light becomes soft, warm, and glowy in the most beautiful, natural way. It’s not harsh or overly bright. It just kind of wraps around you and makes everything feel calm and connected.
That glow happens because the sunlight is coming in at a lower angle, filtering through more of the atmosphere and creating those warm, golden tones. And honestly, it’s magic for photos. Skin looks smoother and warmer, shadows are softer, and no one is squinting or fighting that bright overhead sun. It’s the kind of light that instantly makes your photos feel more emotional, more relaxed, and more like real life.

And as a mom, that’s what I care about most. Photos that actually feel like your family.
Golden hour light is so incredibly flattering. It softens everything in the best way and brings out those little in-between moments. The snuggles, the giggles and the way your kids reach for you without even thinking. It gives your images that warm, timeless feeling that you just can’t recreate at any other time of day.
It’s the difference between a photo you like and a photo you truly love.

Now, let’s talk about the part we’re all thinking about… doing this with little kids.
Golden hour can be late. Especially in the summer, it might fall right in the middle of your usual dinner, bath, or bedtime routine. It can mean adjusting naps, pushing dinner back, or just having a slightly off schedule for the day.
And I want you to know, I truly get it. I have three young kids of my own, so I know how big of an ask that can feel like. Changing up the routine, even just for one day, isn’t always easy. There’s a lot to juggle, and sometimes it feels like you’re throwing everything off.
But I also know just how much lighting matters.
That soft, golden light is what turns your photos into something you feel. It captures your kids in such a gentle, beautiful way, the kind of images that bring you right back to this season of life years down the road.
So yes, it might mean a later bedtime or dinner one night. But what we’re creating together? It’s something you’ll hold onto forever. And that trade-off, just for one evening, is so incredibly worth it.

Of course, I know getting to that point takes a little planning.
If you’re getting ready for a golden hour session, a few simple things can make the whole experience feel easier:
And most importantly, come in with a relaxed mindset—nothing has to be perfect.

(It can shift a little depending on the exact date, but this gives you a really good idea of what to expect.)

At the end of the day, golden hour isn’t just about pretty light, it’s about creating space for connection, slowing down for a moment, and capturing your family exactly as you are right now.
And I promise, that’s something you’ll never regret doing.
