When it comes to extended family photos, there’s something incredibly special about capturing multiple generations all in one place. As a Metro Detroit photographer, I’ve had the honor of documenting so many of these sessions, and they truly become some of the most meaningful images families will ever have.

What to Expect During Your Session

Extended family sessions are a beautiful mix of structure and candid connection. I’ll guide you through the entire process so no one feels awkward or unsure of what to do.

Here’s how a typical session flows:

1. We start with the full group photo: everyone together while energy is high and attention spans are fresh.

2. From there, we break things down into smaller groupings:

• Grandparents with all grandchildren
• Just the grandchildren 
• Individual families
• Siblings
• Parents with their adult children
• Just the grandparents
• Any other specific groupings requested 

3. And of course, I always leave room for those in-between moments, the hugs, the laughter, the chaos that turns into magic.

These sessions are meant to feel relaxed, not rushed. I’ll direct when needed, but I’m also watching for the natural interactions that make your family yours.

How to Style Your Extended Family Session

Styling is one of the most important parts of making your photos feel cohesive and timeless, but don’t worry, I’ll walk you through it step by step.

Step 1: Choose a Color Palette (Not Matching Outfits)

Instead of everyone wearing the exact same thing, choose 3–5 coordinating colors.

Two of my favorite combinations:

• Neutrals (cream, beige, white) with soft pastels
• Earth tones (olive, rust, tan, brown)

The goal is coordination and not to be too matchy-matchy.

Step 2: Start with One Outfit

Pick one outfit you absolutely love (often mom or grandma’s), and build the rest of the family around it. This helps everything feel intentional and pulled together.

Step 3: Mix Textures & Layers

Flowy dresses, knits, linen, denim, these all photograph beautifully and add depth to your images.

Layers like cardigans, button-ups, or light jackets can also add variety without needing full outfit changes.

Step 4: Keep It Comfortable

Especially for kids, comfort is key. If they feel good, they’ll be happier, which makes a huge difference in your photos.

Avoid anything too tight, itchy, or that needs constant adjusting.

Step 5: Think About Movement

Dresses that flow, shirts that move in the breeze, and relaxed fits photograph so beautifully, especially during those candid moments.

Step 6: Limit Bold Patterns & Logos

Stick to subtle patterns if any. Large logos or busy prints can be distracting and take away from the connection in your images.

• Plan ahead so no one is scrambling last minute
• Lay outfits out together to see how they coordinate
• Consider the location (field, beach, urban) when choosing tones
