When it comes to extended family photos, there’s something incredibly special about capturing multiple generations all in one place. As a Metro Detroit photographer, I’ve had the honor of documenting so many of these sessions, and they truly become some of the most meaningful images families will ever have.

Extended family sessions are a beautiful mix of structure and candid connection. I’ll guide you through the entire process so no one feels awkward or unsure of what to do.
Here’s how a typical session flows:
2. From there, we break things down into smaller groupings:
3. And of course, I always leave room for those in-between moments, the hugs, the laughter, the chaos that turns into magic.
These sessions are meant to feel relaxed, not rushed. I’ll direct when needed, but I’m also watching for the natural interactions that make your family yours.

Styling is one of the most important parts of making your photos feel cohesive and timeless, but don’t worry, I’ll walk you through it step by step.
Instead of everyone wearing the exact same thing, choose 3–5 coordinating colors.
Two of my favorite combinations:
The goal is coordination and not to be too matchy-matchy.
Pick one outfit you absolutely love (often mom or grandma’s), and build the rest of the family around it. This helps everything feel intentional and pulled together.
Flowy dresses, knits, linen, denim, these all photograph beautifully and add depth to your images.
Layers like cardigans, button-ups, or light jackets can also add variety without needing full outfit changes.
Especially for kids, comfort is key. If they feel good, they’ll be happier, which makes a huge difference in your photos.
Avoid anything too tight, itchy, or that needs constant adjusting.
Dresses that flow, shirts that move in the breeze, and relaxed fits photograph so beautifully, especially during those candid moments.
Stick to subtle patterns if any. Large logos or busy prints can be distracting and take away from the connection in your images.

Extended family sessions are about so much more than just getting everyone in one photo. They capture a moment that does not come around often, with grandparents and their grandchildren, siblings together, and cousins laughing and playing.
These images become legacy pieces. They’re the photos your children will look back on one day and cherish. They tell the story of your family, exactly as it is right now.

Extended family sessions might feel like a lot to coordinate, but I promise, they are always worth it.
The laughter, the togetherness, the memories being made right in front of you… it all turns into something so meaningful.
As a photographer these sessions hold such a special place in my heart. Being able to capture your entire family, your people, in one frame is something I don’t take lightly.
If you’ve been thinking about scheduling an extended family session, this is your sign. There is never a “perfect” time, only the time you choose to remember.
And I would be so honored to capture it for you 🤍

Choosing a color palette—rather than perfectly matching outfits—is key for extended family sessions. And truly, there is nothing sweeter than grandparents and babies together in one frame. So precious, Charlotte.
Oh my goodness, so many things I would not have thought of on my own in planning an extended family session. This has so much great information.
Love how much you pour into making the MOST out of group photos! The outfit suggestions are on point. You help families make memories to cherish forever!
Extended family sessions do have some of the sweetest memories to remember for forever.
This is such great info Charlotte!
I hired a photographer for an extended family session last summer and I’m SO glad I did. I have beautiful framed prints of the cousins, everyone together including grandparents, and my husband and 2 sons. You gave some great tips on helping to prepare! Beautiful work!
